Define a Space with Furniture

Do you have one room in your house that's randomly filled with furnishings because you have no idea what to make out of the room? Do you have more furniture than space or more space than furniture with nothing clearly defined? Well, there are many ways to create different spaces in a home and I'll guide you through the process with some very creative design tips.

I'll first tell you what it means to define a space and then give you some practical applications to put these design tips into good use.

What does it mean to andquot;define a spaceandquot;? It means to establish andquot;invisibleandquot; walls around a setting to make it look like it's own room. Think of a furniture showroom. You know how every andquot;roomandquot; they have set up looks complete but there are no walls defining it? That's what I'm talking about.

Take that same idea and apply it to your home. Sure they use partitions, which are not very portable but there are plenty of other furnishings that you can use that are very portable just like they do.

Here's an easy way to define a space in your home. Designate a particular spot in the room as the andquot;centerandquot; of your new space. This doesn't have to be the center of the room, especially if you'd like to create many zones in one room. After choosing your andquot;center, andquot; position your furniture around it so that all the pieces face the middle in one way or another. A properly defined space will have furniture that relates to itself and to the middle point.

The furniture in your new space can be placed in a grid pattern on structured 90 degree angles, a radial pattern with the furniture placed freely on an arc, and even a clustered pattern with furniture placed at many angles. As long as they relate to the center point, you have accurately defined your space.

Using Furniture to Create Social Environments

The furniture and how it's placed in your space is what gives your area shape and definition. To establish a social environment, group your furniture in sets of two or three or more, depending on your needs for the space. Angle the pieces at around 90 degrees as this makes a very comfortable place to socialize. For example, arrange your sofa and chair(s) or loveseat in an L-shape or U-shape configuration. You will now see that the backs of the furniture are the borders of the space.

Adding occasional tables for your functionality needs can be done as well. To create a height boundary, add table or floor lamps or plants. You can also use a wall hanging or window for this purpose if your space is near a wall.

Area rugs are a great way to outline the perimeter of your space. There are many shapes to choose from so you don't necessarily need to use an ordinary rectangle. But, it will still work if you choose that shape. Just rotate it a bit to create some interest. Same thing applies to any piece of furniture. Putting one piece off center or on a random angle will give your area a more original look.

Using Furniture to Create Intimate Settings

How you place your furniture in an intimate setting is different than how you would in a social scene. You can use less furniture since this space will only to used by one or two people at a time. To create this intimate scene, place furniture in pairs.

An example of an intimate setting for two would be two chairs and a small table between, maybe caf style. This can be set up by a fireplace, a window or some other place of interest. Again, angling the furniture near 90 degrees will host a very cozy atmosphere.

A setting for one can be made by using one chaise lounge or chair and a small side table for lighting or reading material. This intimate setting can be placed by any area of interest, i.e. by a nice view or on your patio. Just make sure the furniture you choose is close to one another and your intimate scene will be set.

Again for this intimate space, you can use an area rug to create the outline on the floor. For a setting for two, use a square or round rug but remember to rotate the square rug for more creative flow. For the single setting, use a runner parallel to your chaise lounge or even a mat under the table or in front of the chair you choose.

It's now very easy to see how to define a space using your furniture. No matter the amount of space you have, you can have the settings you want. The next time you're re-arranging your home, keep these creative design tips in mind.
