Just because a scholarship is given for merit doesn't mean they are awarded purely for a student's academic record. Actually there are several other types out there, and they can be equally as rewarding in their own right. A good example is the good citizenship scholarship. The academic standards here aren't quite as tough as the academic version, and it can end up being beneficial in a lot of other ways.At their core, good citizenship scholarships are given out for a student's exceptional contributions to society as a whole. There is a practical side to it as well. While the evidence is overall anecdotal, it's common knowledge that those who make an impact on society at a young age tend to make exceptional college students. The greater the good they do, usually the greater their grades are also.If you want to earn one of these scholarships, the first bit of advice is to get started as soon as possible. Make sure that whatever good work is done, it is done with the aid or assistance of a recognized organization, from a private club or church to a government authority.Another important point is that it can't be just good work, it needs to be exceptional work. For example, it's good to be handing out food and clothing to the homeless, but a student is more likely to get recognition by actually starting or leading a food or clothing drive with others involved. While that may sound self-serving, at the same time it helps more people than just doing it all by oneself.Getting the work recognized while still in high school is great, but the thing to do is to make sure the right people also notice it. By that it's meant such groups as the Masons, a local governmental agency or even an on campus or online college. As it happens, there are probably dozens of these within the city or county the student lives in. So drawing their attention is all that's needed from there. That is another thing to be careful about. Each of these groups has their share of restrictions. The most common is a student should graduate from high school with a 2.5 grade point average. Another might involve matriculating to a limited list of schools, either on campus or online. The amount of the scholarship awards can also vary greatly. While there are some that can be as much as several thousand dollars, others can be as low as $100. Besides being restricted to a specific group of schools, they can also require that the scholarship be applied immediately upon matriculation or enrollment. Others will allow as much as a seven year period to be applied. Therefore, it's good to check with a college counselor about the award.
