Top University Student Essay Writing Tips

Time spend at college will mainly concentrate on a number of essays on your different modules, which will need to be completed to contribute to your final classification. You will also need to show that your writing skills are strong in these essays.

Know your research material - everyone will need to conduct research for their essays and this will affect how well they will be able to contribute to their overall understanding in the topic. You will need to make notes when reading this research material and also need to understand what you will be writing about.

Relax. Especially if you are writing an important essay, or an essay in an exam, its vital that you relax before you start to write. Breathe in and out a few times and take a few minutes to read and think about the exam. If you start straight away, you will be feeling the stress and are more likely to write a bad essay than if you are composed and focused on the task in hand.

Know the question - if you understand what the essay question is about and what you will need to cover, then this will make it a lot easier for you to write about it. You need to understand what is expected of you too, because submitting an essay that is over the word count or goes completely off topic wont be accepted with glee.

Know your question in-depth - simply knowing what your essay question is asking wont be enough to write an effective essay for submission, as you will also need to understand that you will need to analyze all of the information out there and understand what is expected of you. You will also need to ensure you know the different parts to the question and what key terms are used and also mean.

Establish a schedule - you should know how long it will take you from when you are given the essay , through to when you will need to submit it. You should allow at least two days to plan your schedule and two after your research to write the actual essay. Then, you ensure that you will have written a comprehensive essay that is completed by the time for submission.

Jot down some ideas. Spend a few minutes figuring out exactly what you want to say and make these into a plan, complete with structuring a plan. This helps to make sure you don't repeat yourself and anything you do say is relevant and precise.

Begin strong - if you construct a boring and long introduction then the reader will become bored already without beginning to read the whole of the essay. This first part will set out the rest of the essay in positive or negative light; don't let it be the latter.

Reassure yourself along the way - as you go through your essay you should be looking at the question you are attempting to answer. Re-reading the question as you write your essay will mean that you are able to check that your work is on track.

Don't panic. If you are running out of time or things to say, remember that you can list the points you want to say and this will show that you did have the knowledge to answer the question. Don't rush, or try to ramble or cram, as this could undermine the rest of your essay. A simple one sentence conclusion emphasizing your main point should be a sufficient to sum up if you become too stuck.

Editing at the end - reading over your essay paper when you have got to the end should be completed no matter what. This is best left to the day or a few days after you have typed the last word, but should be done as you will be able to check your work for spelling and grammar errors. When you do this you will probably realize there are quite a few mistakes in your work that you didn't think were there - something that could negatively impact on your grade if the weren't rectified.
