Everyone would like to get high grades on a consistent basis, but only a small percentage of Choosing a college students manage to do it. The students who "ace" their exams regularly don't have any great secret, but simply work in a methodical manner. If you would like to get an "A" on a regular basis then you should also start working in a systematic way. Follow my guidelines outlined here and you too can enjoy academic success.
The first tip on the road to high grades is simply to keep up with your reading on a regular basis. That is, read the assigned texts as soon as you get the assignment rather than waiting till the last minute to cram in all the information. Many students don't keep up with the homework assignments and hastily read, or skim through, the books in the last few days before the test. This approach is good in theory but not in practice, so to be sure of absorbing the important material, keep up to date with your reading assignments. The next step is to attend the classes yourself and take good notes. Once again it may be theoretically possible for you to just copy the notes of someone else who has attended all of the lectures, but if you do it yourself you will be able to understand the context in which the notes were taken and will be in a better position to do well on the exams. The next tip for getting high grades is to always find out what will be covered on any given examination. Your instructor or teachers will not give you the answers or questions in advance but they will at least let you know what you have to study in order to be able to answer the test questions. Find out which reading assignments will be included within the scope of the test and any other information that they can provide. Armed with this information, go ahead and study for the test.If you have done your reading assignments regularly, taken good notes, and know what the test will cover then the next step is simply to review the material thoroughly the day before the test. Focus on the main points of the class notes and skim through the books that you were supposed to read. If you have time, go through all of the material two or three times and then get a good night's sleep. The final tip is just to show for the test with a positive and alert mind and a well rested body. If you are alert and confident when you take a test you are very likely to work to the best of your capacity and also to follow the instructions of the test carefully. Errors in procedure can be costly so it is always important to be alert and also not to panic in case some of the questions are very difficult. In case you are unsure about the instructions for taking the test, always ask the instructor for clarification.Follow the tips and procedures that I have described above, and you will surely be able to work to your best capacity. Hopefully you will be able to "ace" your next exam and the ones that follow.Ellen Rhodes writes for the American Educational Guidance Center.
