Surgical Technology Training Courses and Schools Across the US
Surgical technologists assist doctors in the operating room. They are responsible for a wide range of tasks, including the preparation of the operating room before surgery and restocking the operating room afterwards. The surgical technologist also can assist the doctors during the surgery itself, and take care of the patient immediately after the operation.
Training for Surgical Technology
There are various options available for training in surgical technology. Generally, a surgical technologist will have an education from a college or technical school. Training programs last from one year to two or more years. This training helps prepare the student to graduate and pursue an entry-level position.
Coursework for the surgical technologist can be demanding. In addition to learning surgical procedures, the student can study various branches of science including biology and anatomy. Training also can include learning laboratory techniques, and the use of the microscope.
A surgical tech student also can study physiology, another branch of biology, which is very closely related to anatomy. Physiology is the study of the body at the organ and cellular level. While anatomy is the study of form, physiology is the study of function. Physiology courses will focus a lot on the origins of diseases and their treatment.
In some schools, anatomy and physiology classes will be taken together, during the same semester. The surgical technology student can study and need to understand the different systems in the body, including the circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems.
Most importantly, students should learn not just how these systems work independently, but how they function together. Infact surgical technologists are professionals who are members of an operating room team. They work under the supervision of surgeons and other surgical personnel.
Completion of Surgical Technology Training
After completing a degree at a surgical tech school, most graduates will take a certification exam.
This exam is administered by the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist (LCCST). To become certified, the successful applicant must pass this exam, and must have graduated from an accredited program. There is no guarantee of third-party certification/licensure.
Outside agencies control the requirements for taking and passing certification/licensing exams and are subject to change without notice to the institution, Therefore, it is strongly advised that the prospective surgical technology student ask school representatives about a school's programmatic accreditation before enrolling!
Brown Mackie College is a system of over 20 schools located throughout the United States and is specialized in surgical tech. This college is known as the best surgical tech school
