More females than males now enroll for post secondary degrees but this was not always the case. Funding grants have helped alter a scenario in which girls were encouraged to settle down and raise families rather than pursue an ambitious academic career. If you are female, it is even more challenging given the historical imbalance in status and earning power between the sexes.

There are now special programs aimed at providing scholarships for single mothers. This is especially meaningful as it can help female students doing the very hard work of raising children alone continue their education without incurring a burdensome debt load.

To help address imbalances in enrollment in the historically overwhelmingly male fields of engineering, computer science and mathematics, some funding programs target getting female students into these courses. Others target graduate study for the best and brightest female undergrads.

Online databases list the eligibility requirements and limitations of each fund for prizes and grants offered by foundations, corporation and colleges and universities. They may be searched according to discipline and by other criteria such as financial need or special circumstances.

It is a fact of modern society that female must work harder to succeed in earning a living after school. But they do have many options for continuing their education without taking out loans and racking up debt. Scholarships for women or for single mothers are helping female students take charge of their educational futures to come out ahead.
