Laptop Warranties
I purchased a netbook (a mini laptop) from a major laptop distributor for $349.99; the netbook was defective, so I returned the netbook, and was charged $52.50 (15%) for a restocking fee. I had to bite my lip to control my anger as I walked out, never to return. This happens to 4% of all new laptop purchased globally. I know I am not the only one getting ticked-off at the laptop distributors for having anti-consumer warranty plans.
There are times when you will buy a laptop, you get the laptop home, and you may not like how the mouse works or you feel the color just doesnt suit you. So you take it back to the distributor, and they in turn send the computer back to the manufacturer. The manufacturer tests the laptop, and brings the computer back to its original design specifications to be resold to the consumer.
Now, some businesses buy or lease large qualities of laptops at discounts, and after a two or three years they resell the laptops back to the manufacture, so they can recover some of their original investment principal. The laptops that make it through the quality control department are re-tested and brought back to the original design specifications to be resold to the consumer.
The warranty also states the warranty will be voided if you use the laptop in an extreme environment (including extreme temperature or humidity). Basically this means if I live in Hawaii, Alaska, Louisiana, or Floridaandquot;the warranty could automatically be voided! Are they serious?
The warranty goes on to state the warranty will be voided if the laptop is not used in normal conditions. What if I bought the laptop for work, and lets say I worked in the field. This means the manufactures warranty could be voided. It sounds like the manufacture only wants their laptops purchased by people who do not venture out the house.
But, if you buy a refurbished laptop youre going to need a warranty outside of the manufacture. Most laptop distributors will not offer a warranty outside of the manufacture. But if youre looking for a warranty on a refurbished or new laptops (thats free with the laptop purchase) beyond the laptop manufacturer, I would recommend this laptop link.
Lets take a look. The price of the laptop was $290 dollars; they then charged a restocking fee of 15%, which brought the value down to $246.50 dollars. But you lost $110 in additional shipping costs to ship the laptop to you, and you spent another $110 dollars to ship the computer back to the distributor.
What about refurbished laptops? Approximately 96% of all refurbished laptops have no warranties at all, since the warranty had expired for some time. But I see on the internet that distributors of refurbished laptops claim there is a 3 or 6 month warrantyandquot;but in reality there is none. I call this deceptive marketing, and Im being kind to them.
This is why it is so important to buy from a reputable laptop distributor who offers an exceptional return policy without a restocking fee, and pays for any return shipping charges back to the distributor. I highly recommend this laptop link for quality laptops, which includes a top-notch warranty (free of charge).
Its a good idea when you buy refurbished laptop, to go directly to the manufacturers website and type in the make and serial number of your laptop to see the remaining term (if any) on the manufactures warranty.andnbsp; What good is it to have a warranty, if youre not going to honor it? The bottom-line, the basic manufactures warranty is worth very little, since it protects the manufacture and not the consumer.
