Transhumanism is a concept that is currently being hotly discussed and a controversial one to say the least. It is a topic, that if some predictions are proven to be correct, could change the face of the world as we know it forever. In short, transhumanism refers to an upcoming period in human history where mankind might be able to supplement and increase their own physical and cognitive abilities using technology. This involves some pretty exciting (and potentially scary) ideas – such as the ability to live forever through drugs, to use prosthetic limbs, to communicate telepathically using machines and to to be able to interface directly with any gadget using ports on our own bodies.Of course this has many moral and ethical implications, as well as political ones and scientists are divided over how this technology should be used if it does become available. If it sounds like science fiction then it might surprise you to learn that there is already a man who can communicate with his wife telepathically via electrodes placed near their spines, or to hear that some paralysed patients have been given the ability to control computers directly with their minds. In a different version of transhuman technology already in development, some scientists have demonstrated the ability to create mice that have incredible musculature without training, and even to turn back the signs of ageing. This is still a way off of course, but interestingly some technologies could already be considered transhumanism. Take the 64GB SDCX, here you have a card that is absolutely tiny that you can carry around with you anywhere and that you could plug into anything to store, access and copy an incredible amount of data. While this is only a fraction of what the human mind is capable of storing, it is nevertheless still an expansion on what we are currently able to store meaning we are expanding our own capacity in much the way you might expand the capacity of a camera – of course this is a very transhuman concept. At the same time a 64GB SDCX even allows us to store the information differently by retaining things in much more detail – while we can remember more than you could store onto a 64GB SDCX, it is stored in a far different format here and is accurate word-to-word – which isn't true of our own memory. In short then, we have greatly boosted our own abilities with a 64GB SDCX, the only thing is that a 64GB SDCX is removable and not a part of us in the sense that we might consider transhuman. However this needn't make it any less transhuman and other examples of transhuman technology are also removable – take for instance powered suits such as those in the Iron Man movie. These are widely considered transhuman and yet they represent no permanent change to our bodies. Thus a 64GB SDCX could be considered transhuman by some definitions and by carrying it around you are expanding the power of your very mind – it is an exocortex.
