The cathode ray tube in monitors accounts for the large bulge behind the screen on CRT monitors. Because of this essential aspect of the screen design, CRT monitors often took up a large part of computer desks, or simply didn t fit in workspaces. LCD screens require little space and thus allow for more room on desks, greater accessibility, and added flexibility. Now, it isn t uncommon for people to use multiple LCD screens on their desk, something that would have been unheard of in all but the largest of office desks.

For anyone used to the bulk and weight of an CRT monitor, an LCD is a welcome change, particularly if you ever need to move the monitor. CRT displays were bulky and awkward to carry. However, the liquid crystal technology is infinitely lighter. What used to take two hands and a strong back to carry can now be picked up with one hand.

In the not so distant past a 19-inch LCD screen was considered huge and cost prohibitive, but today, a monitor of that size is a fairly standard size and affordable price. You can find up to 22-inch LCD monitors for as low as $150. Monitors can range in price between under $100 to more than $1,000, so have in mind what you would like to spend, the applications you will use it for, and the options and performance you expect. Also, if you are adding the monitor to an older computer there may be a cost associated with upgrading a graphics card on your computer. Finally, make sure that the monitor you choose comes with all necessary cables as this can be an additional expense not factored into the price.
