Barcodes are the optical patterns found on the packaging of most products and sale items used to identify those products and are made up of multiple black bars of varying thickness and with varying spaces between. These bars (which actually can also come in other styles including dots and images) encode a unique number, the primary use of which is to enable products to be identified using optical scanners that then means the system can provide information about that product such as the price, any special offers, the date etc. At the same time this enables more options in terms of marketing, and the ability to monitor buyers' activities and preferences and check a cash float against the items sold that day to check for money that may have gone missing or been miscounted.

This can also be highly helpful for online stores, and help them to identify products quickly in order to quickly and accurately dispatch items to the customers. This means that most retailers, both online and in the stores all around New Zealand, require all their products to include a barcode on the packaging. In order to begin selling a product on a large scale then, either as a business or individual, it s necessary to first purchase the relevant number of barcodes and ensure that each package has a barcode attached. For books this is slightly different and titles will require individual ISBN which again identifies the title allowing it to be quickly searched online and in stores and again to be marketed effectively. Similarly magazine titles require 'ISSN numbers and both ISBNs and ISSNs utilise barcodes to allow for easy scanning. Barcodes can be used to include information like product name, URLs as well as pricing information.

Today more and more individuals are beginning to market their own products through their own entrepreneurial activities or via their own companies. Using technologies such as Print On Demand publishing and 3D Printing it s now easy for anyone to design and create their own items, but in order to get them sold they require a barcode or ISBN. Previously this would have meant joining an international barcodes organisation which would require both a joining fee and an annual fee in order to receive a bulk load of barcodes.

This is an expensive and complicated route, but is okay in terms of cost effectiveness for large companies with lots of barcodes. However for those selling just one or two items there was previously no option to buy just a single barcode. Furthermore these organisations would require continued membership (and so incur more funds) while you used the codes on existing products as you didn t actually own the rights.

Making matters worse you only got the numbers for this price and had to design the images yourself (which would require you to obtain specialist software). These have no other associated costs and come with images and all rights – you can even re-use them for new products if other lines are cancelled or sold out.
