In case the doors of your apartment open to an internal hall, make sure that the building has a secure admission system which requires a code or a key to enter. If the doors open to the outside of the apartment, make sure it is bolted with lock and deadbolt. Change the locks once the tenants evacuate.

The fire exits should be above the ground floor or basement so that you may leave but others are unable to enter. The exit should also be locked from within. The mail should be kept in a suitably lit space with quality locks for preventing lock theft. The landlord should also have a good reputation so that the maintenance related problems can be suitably fixed, like the burned lights (these are places where criminals take shelter).

You need to use common sense. Take adequate precautions to ensure the safety and protection of your stereo, TV, computer, money and above all life. The aim is to dissuade the criminals from breaking into your apartment and this is why you need to eliminate all the signs which indicate that the doors are open or that the entrance to your house is easy. While using common sense, remember to lock the door on leaving. The windows should not be left open throughout the day. There should not be small notes to friends saying that you re out.

The doors should not be left ajar when you move out temporarily like in the local store. By the time you are out, your CDs or stereo system could be gone. It is highly likely that you come in during the progress of a crime. In that case, if you are suspecting something, do not enter the apartment.

There are a few tips that you can follow in order to make sure that your home or property is safe while you are away on vacation.

1. First of all do not inform people about the dates when you will be away from home. Avoid mentioning it unless they really want to know.

2. A few of the lights in the house should be put on timers which means that they will be switched on automatically during the night. Make sure there is a program running so as to ensure randomness like lights being switched on at different times on different days. This will confuse the burglar who hangs around the house for several days as he will not know whether anyone is around.

3. Do not take newspaper delivery in order to avoid the newspapers piling up on the outside of your home.

4. Get a relative or friend pick up your mail or you may even let it be held at the post office.

5. Have a car parked on the driveway.

Before leaving home, you must not forget to double check the locks on the doors and windows. If there is an alarm, make sure to put it on. Keep the valuables in a safe that is secure from anyone peeping from the window. If you are burglarized during a vacation, and return home to find so, contact the police.
