Twitter is being used by people all over the world. In fact, the application has now been around for some time and each day new uses are found for this blog like tool. As a marketer, I've been wondering about the uses of Twitter and how it might be used to help my business.

As someone who resisted Twitter for quite some time, I finally dove in and learned what all of the excitement was about. Similar to other social networking sites like Flickr and Facebook and others, Twitter provides a forum for real time communication. It connects us all and brings us closer to others with similar interests.

What if you could find influential people in your industry and directly listen to them, learn from them, and see what they're focused on? Enter Twitter and the ability to search, find, and follow those in your industry. You may be quite surprised by all the people out there in your niche sharing ideas, news, and information. By following these people you can stay on top of industry trends and learn a great deal.

In addition to following people and the industry information they're sharing, you can also find others who bring value to your day. Whether its connecting with someone who is funny or provides you with daily thought, your list of people to follow is completely in your control. This gives you a great deal of flexibility and more importantly filters information that you want to receive.

Once you've gotten comfortable with Twitter, its time to start building a following. Just you follow others, others may want to follow you. The best place to begin is by adding quality posts. What are you reading that may be of interest to others? What web sites are you visiting on a regular basis? Share those things that provide value to others and you will quickly create a large list of followers. Once you have a list, you can begin to utilize your list of followers much like you would a direct marketing house list.

Keep in mind that building a list is valuable. This list, if comprised of individuals interested in your niche or company can translate into customers. There are a variety of techniques you can deploy to do this but one of the easiest is to encourage them to visit your site, by posting a link, and getting them to register or sign up. Attach an auto responder to the sign up and move them through the purchase cycle. If the list of followers is targeted and you can add something of value, then you and your customers will be pleased with the communication.

Twitter can provide an ideal channel for building a list of prospective followers and adding value. Begin with an understanding of your audience and provide valuable information that can help them succeed. Once you've build up a trust level, offer products or services that can help them solve a problem. This will move your business forward and help your followers as well.
