Have you updated your legal marketing calendar yet? If not, the New Year is the ideal time to do so. In fact, following is one thing you can do – today – to get business flowing in and bring in the new year with a bang. As an attorney, you probably belong to a few organizations, eg, your local chamber of commerce, some bar association committees, some legal networking groups, etc. Well, now is an excellent time to renew those associations.

One of the best ways to do so is to conduct a legal workshop. Try to make it pertinent to daily life issues of those in your community. This will increase participation. For example, if you are a bankruptcy attorney, you could offer a free seminar on the consequences of filing bankruptcy. A lot of people are considering bankruptcy now because unemployment is high, foreclosures continue to skyrocket and many have lost their jobs. Your seminar could be just what they need in order to make a decision. And if they do decide to file, who do you think they are going to call? You! After all thanks to the good info your seminar provides, it's practically a foregone conclusion.

If you are a real estate lawyer, you could do a seminar about foreclosures, telling homeowners what their options are before, during and after the process.

If you are a divorce lawyer, do a workshop on child custody and/or support issues. Divorce filings usually shoot up at the beginning of the year. A free seminar offered via your local chamber of commerce, for example, can be just the thing to get new clients and referrals flowing in.

By offering your legal seminar through an organization you already belong to, you get double the bang for your efforts. Number one, you give other members a reason to market for you because it can be a free offer they extend to their clientele. Perfect for you – and for them. And number two, they probably already know and trust you.
