Initially due to bad maintenance, lots of downtime were reported and also the frequency of costly equipment breaking down and going out of order increased, resulting in huge loss for the organizations.

India has slowly evolved from the concept of just wiping the floors and keeping a watchman to switch off and on the air conditioners and water pumps. The recent BPO growth and mall and multiplexes boom has also offered attractive and financially benefiting business opportunities in facilities management.

Initially Administration and Facility management was thought to be one and the same thing in India, but now the concept has changed and Facility management itself is a huge arena width lots of opportunities. FM comprises everything which is related to smooth running of an organization. It is critically important to maintain a well-managed and highly efficient facility and that is now imperative behind the success of any organization.

The businesses know that they will be running their business with peace of mind rather than being worried. The role of facilities management is to help businesses concentrate in their core competence areas. It takes on the role of providing routine, non-value-added services which are essential and important for the effective running of an organization.

Now a lot of companies have launched the facilities management software. Anyone can go to the Internet and can browse through many websites available which are offering packages and also web based facility management. Extreme care should be taken while choosing an appropriate software. All the modules must be checked thoroughly and investment should be made with the most robust package so that costly errors can be avoided and the software must be good enough to provide alerts for preventive maintenance to avoid costly repairs and replacements for infrastructure and facilities.

India is a sleeping giant which has awakened now and more and more companies are becoming aware of the benefits of facility management software. So a business house offering this job stands to gain the most in the coming decade. The most important challenge is to source and retain the right manpower in this field with constant training and upgradation
