Selecting the Ideal CEU Course

Article Written By: Lance Parks01

Add Your Picture Continuing education courses are a boon for professionals and non-professionals alike. For professionals they represent a way to stay in touch with their field of expertise and not lose out on new learning opportunities. For the non-professionals, they are a shorter route to gaining expertise in conventional as well as unconventional study areas. Unless specifically guided by a mentor or friend, it is however not an easy task to pick a CEU course all by yourself.

The first suggestion that educators give is to gauge the level of interest in a particular area. Even for regular students paying huge tuitions, it is impossible to be interested on all the mandatory courses. Optional courses need even greater powers of concentration. Thus, it is vital to pick a CEU course which is definitely of interest. Notice that educators prioritize this even over picking a relevant topic, which is second on this list. This is purely psychological - interest can drive a person to accomplish tasks of little or no relevance to his/her life otherwise. But when interest begins to wane, the relevance of a task can sometimes keep noses stuck to the grindstone.

Another pointer to potential CEU course takers is to enroll for courses which have something new to offer. Signing up for a subject you know all about is redundant, and mostly useless. These courses are in some countries called further education courses, and unless they really further your education, their value is lost. Furthermore, they are not an avenue to assure oneself of one's knowledge - a coffee break debate would suffice for that, and would be free too. It might sound like a tall order finding CEUs that meet all these conditions, but from the educator's perspective, the very design of these courses has these perspectives as founding principles.

It is almost important to know your current educational status accurately. Continuing education is a rather personal, individual affair and not suited for batch training. Every person who seeks to advance his/her knowledge has a different outlook and a different appetite. More to the point, each person comes with a personal checklist of what is needed to be learnt. This is a rejoinder for both participants and providers.

The former group has to avoid falling into the herd mentality and not take courses simply because others are taking them. The latter have the onerous responsibility of ensuring they don't create a free-sized course that is tailored for all, but fits none.

Professionals that oversee CEU courses often have counseling available to find out ahead of enrolment the demands of prospective pupils and advise them accordingly on the greater suitability of certain courses over others.

Continuing education is the lamp that illuminates many a career path for those who see no light at present. If you choose a candle where a flashlight may be more handy, the purpose is defeated.
