Tips for working your way up the career ladder
The economy in Britain is not great. The worldwide recession seems to have taken its toll on a lot of people. Chances are you might know people who have been affected by the recession. Maybe they have lost their jobs. Some people spend many months trying to find new jobs because the opportunities are fewer today. And, if you have a job, you have to be worried about losing it. For those of you out there who are newer to the workforce, it may be difficult to remain positive. There, often times, seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. And, it is not surprising if you sometimes feel hopeless. However, do not get discouraged. Even though it may be a difficult time that does not mean there are not ways to advance in your career.
First of all, keep in mind that things are always changing. You never know when someone could decide to move on or take a different opportunity. When that happens, you might be the first person called on to step up and take their place. Secondly, keep in mind that because of your youth, you have a fresh take and a perspective that other people do not have. It may be easier for you to understand what is happening around the country than those you work with because you are living it. This is particularly true with technology.
Although you may not get promoted tomorrow, keep in mind the importance of working hard. One day when I was slightly discouraged and feeling like I was making no progress this lady I had worked with said something very wise to me. She told me that I reminded her of someone who was very successful. She explained how when that successful person was my age everyone was always talking about how great she was. Then, she told me that if I wanted to end up as successful as that person it was up to me; and, the way to achieve my desires was by working my very hardest every single day. I have never forgotten what she said. And, I have also never stopped working hard.
Lastly, be humble. There is so much we can learn from those above us. They are our superiors for a reason. Ask them questions. Listen to their advice. And, figure out what it is that got them to where they are today. You will undoubtedly learn a few things in your investigation that should help you as you set goals toward your future career path.
