Preparing for Your Phlebotomy Certification Exam

Article Written By: DeborahDera

Add Your Picture Phlebotomists are responsible for more than just drawing blood. They must know how to communicate effectively with patients in order to take accurate histories, be able to ensure a clean work environment as well as a sterile puncture site, know how to prepare specimens for the lab, and work with a variety of other medical professionals.

To sit for a certification examination, you must be able to account for a certain amount of knowledge and experience in all of these areas. Here are some tips for preparing for your phlebotomy certification exam:

Avoid Cramming

In order for any knowledge to truly soak in, you must learn it over an extended period of time. Rather than cram all of your studying into a frenzied two days before the test, devote a certain amount of time each day, over the course of several weeks, to studying and reinforcing what you learned in your training. That way, you are not just temporarily memorizing information but, rather, actually learning it for the long haul.

Gather Your Study Materials

The institution that you received your phlebotomy training at, as well as the certifying organization, can provide you with useful study materials for your upcoming examination. Take advantage of the resources your certifying agency provides, as those study guides will include information that is most specific to your particular examination.

Write it Out

Studies show that when you write down information, you retain much more of it than you do if you only read it. Therefore, when you read study material, make it a point to write down important information. You may do this in the form of flash cards, outlines, or even sample tests that you can use as study aids.

Keep Practicing

There are a number of online practice examinations that you can take to familiarize yourself with the material that the certification test will cover, get used to the different ways of wording questions, and learn of the different types of test questions you may run into. Also, using your practice test results, you can easily size-up the areas that you need to do additional studying in.

Practical Matters

It is important that you take care of the basics before the big day. That means attending to the simple things that lend to you feeling and performing at your best. Eat a well-balanced meal, get a good night s sleep, and avoid stressors that can distract you from the important task at hand. Also, take some quiet time to relax, clear your mind, and find focus before you sit for the exam.

Taking any kind of test can be a stressful endeavor. Just remember that you put all that hard work into training, gaining experience, practicing, and studying, and that you have what it takes to earn your certification.
