How to make the most of your internship

Article Written By: bythesea

Add Your Picture The job market can be tough; there are so many people out there looking for a finite number of jobs - so it can be a real boost if you can find yourself an internship or work placement to set yourself apart from the crowd. Relevant experience is a huge factor when it comes to being considered for a job, so do everything you can to gain it - particularly if you're looking to enter a particularly competitive sector.

Some employers expect demonstrable experience for even entry-level jobs, so it's important that you research the area you're looking to break into and see how you shape up against general candidate requirements. Competition for internships is understandably intense but there are tools out there that you can use to your advantage. For example, use a website that collects information on available internships or placements in your chosen area; this way, you won't miss out on an opportunity that might just be perfect for you.

The most important thing is to realise early on just what an amazing opportunity you have in front of you. Your placement will give you invaluable insight into the inner workings of the company you're with and, if applicable, help you to decide how you would like to specialise within your chosen field. If you have an idea already, then make sure that you are given the opportunity to experience the area you're interested in while you're there. Asking to shadow somebody who is carrying out your dream job is a great way to gain the kind of experience that you're after.

All that said, it's also a good idea to be open to other areas of the business too. It could well be that you hadn't considered something that may turn out to be a perfect fit for you. Keep an open mind and you won't go too far wrong.

Also try to be pro-active wherever possible. If you spot a task that you feel you could carry out in order to help the team you're working with, go ahead and suggest it. Similarly, if you uncover a way in which the company's processes could be improved, step up and make yourself heard. Of course, you'll want to do it in a tactful way as you don't want to come across as cocky - but if you manage to impress your mentor with such initiative it'll reflect incredibly well on you in the future.

One of the most important things to remember about an internship or a work placement is that you have the perfect opportunity to make incredibly useful contacts for the future. Even if you decide that this company in particular isn't the one you want to work for, it might just be that somebody there leaves to set up their own business in the future. Make a good impression and you'll be on that person's wishlist when they start recruiting intelligent, eager staff for their start-up.

Make the most of your internship and you'll be head and shoulders ahead of the average applicant when it comes to looking for a full-time job. The kind of experience that a work placement can provide will go a long way to putting you top of the candidate pile.
