Great recruitment tips when setting up a marketing company
With 10 years working in marketing, for a diverse range of clients, I feel the time is right to set up on my own. I've got the contacts, the experience, the skills and importantly, the drive to go it alone. I've worked under two companies, and recently have been doing a lot of consultancy work as a freelance. So it makes sense I should set up a small business, and start thinking about taking a couple of people on. Of course an admin assistant would be great. Someone with the desire to get into marketing would be an advantage, as it's always preferable to train up your own staff, as trust and loyalty are as valuable as skills and experience.
As a potential employer, I'm now starting to look at recruitment web sites. Recruiting an employee from these online resources has many advantages. The ability to look at a wide range of people from across the country, by matching our needs with their aspirations, rather than having to spend money on advertising, is of course an obvious and significant benefit. Especially considering financial resources and time constraints as a small business, using a web site to find someone who is looking for a new marketing job is much easier.
That's not to say I won't consider advertising in the trade publications. It's likely we will do that too. We just need to use a recruitment facility that many applicants will use. With CVs uploaded and their other professional details, it will be easy to target the right people for the couple of marketing positions I hope we will have available.
In the past I have browsed some online recruitment web sites. I wasn't necessarily looking for a marketing job though! Just trying them out to see how they worked. I suppose when you're preparing for a new venture in business, you find yourself researching opportunities all the time.
The marketing sector can be highly competitive, but the key is to keep existing customers happy as much as attracting new markets. I doubt we'll start off as a specialist marketing agency, but those looking for marketing Jobs may have specific skills and experience that we will probably want to utilise.
In some ways it will be a tough brief I will be presenting to the recruitment agency. I'm planning to be based near where I live, which is a rural location. Commuting would be out of the question as we're a good 2 hours from the nearest major city. But I want to get the best available from across the country, so the roles will need to be filled by people willing to re-locate.
Projects are being lined up right now. Of course I can manage them and outsource some work to my freelance contacts, but those who apply for a marketing job with me will need to be able to go straight into a project, and it could mean starting midway. So, it's with a lot of hope that I venture into setting up my marketing business!
