To officially carry the title of "accountant" one actually has to take accounting courses and learn all the ins-and-outs related to the profession. Believe it or not, but beyond carrying out fundamental tasks, an accountant also has to prepare, analyze and verify financial documents in order to provide information to the head accountant or clients, if they work independently.

Other duties accountants can include in their repertoire are:

- Back-office operating functions, such as purchasing and inventory, payroll, cash inflow and cash payments, and property record keeping.

- Budget analysis.

- Various tax returns like sales, payroll and property taxes.

- Financial and investment planning.

- Measuring and recording the costs of products.

- Information technology consulting

- Limited legal services

- Preparing financial statements to inform company owners, or private clients, where their businesses stand financially.

These skills can be acquired at esteemed business institutes, schools specializing in various business related trades, including accounting. Under the supervision of highly trained teachers, students are taught how to perform accounting duties for private and public entities. They will also develop knowledge in supervising and controlling accounting systems, and maintaining internal control systems. In addition, they will learn how to prepare tax returns, financial statements for reporting entities, and how to analyze business performance.

Accounts need a creative and attentive personality, a modicum of intelligence and should have a good eye for numbers. They have to be responsible and alert so they can spot and report fluctuations in their data before problems grow. What may be a slight profit loss today may turn into a devastating disaster tomorrow. As you can see, the stakes can be quite high and are living proof that an accountant's job is far from boring.
