Catering Businesses come in many guises, and are used for a range of purposes, from eat-in restaurants to mobile catering units that provide food and drink to the masses at outdoor events.

Restaurants are probably the first place that you think of when a catering business is mentioned. Restaurants can be super expensive or reasonably priced and like most businesses come in a range of qualities. They can be themed or serve a specific kind of food, or country s food. For example Planet Hollywood is themed superstar style with memorabilia from films and a themed menu; some restaurants will just serve vegetarian or seafood fair; and there are restaurants from every type of country from China to India, Ethiopia to England. Fine restaurants often appear in top class hotels.

Pub s, once the domain of just drinking, are becoming more and more aware that people like to eat whilst drinking and socialising. Some pub s have fine menu s, source excellent ingredients and employ revered chef s (who often are the owners), these are known as gastro pubs. Other pubs offer simply home cooked food. But the largest percent of chain pubs offer microwavable and pre packaged dinner, which is cheap and quick to prepare for en masse drinkers.

Cafes in the UK range in quality and who they are aiming to sell their food to. There are places known as greasy spoons, where fried breakfasts and traditional cooked dinners are served mainly to working men. There are tea shops which offer beverages and cakes generally patronised by the older generation. And there are the increasingly popular coffee shops where a range of different coffee s and snacks are available. Sandwich shops tend to offer sandwiches to go to the lunchtime crowd, with a small amount of seating for those who choose to eat in.

Mobile catering facilities have smartened up their act from the hamburger and hotdog stands selling a limited menu at outdoor events. Now mobile caterers offer a huge amount of food from every corner of the world. From crepes and churros to Jerk Chicken and Jambalaya. Mobile catering units also cater for film and television crews on set, so have to ensure that food is good quality for their sometimes picky clientele.

Pop Up Restaurants are a relatively new phenomena. They are usually a one, two or three night event, where a chef and front of house team create a restaurant in an unusual setting such as derelict building. The chef serves some amazing masterpieces and the restaurant closes, perhaps to pop up again somewhere entirely different a few months later.

When people have weddings and parties they often bring in outside caterers to make and present the food they will be serving. Outside caterers take care of everything from devising an appropriate menu and sourcing good quality food, to budgeting, serving and cleaning up afterwards.

Specialist Businesses include caterers who specialize in a certain area such as cake makers and decorators.
