If your company is looking to hire a head hunter this article will explain the 5 different categories of head hunter and what they are best suited for.

The world of executive recruiters, head hunters and retained search firms can be a confusing one. So many terms are thrown around that it may be difficult to know who is who. If you are confused which head hunter would be right to hire than this article may provide a bit of insight into the 5 different types of head hunters that are out there vying for your skills to fill their clients open positions.

1) Specialty Head Hunter

Specialty head hunters typically focus on one aspect of a particular industry, such as an assets management head hunter or healthcare recruiter. Normally these specialized head hunters are very well connected in their field and they may be hard to find for both job seekers and hiring companies alike. A specialty head hunters rates may be more than that of say a general head hunter, but their results will be better.

2) General Head Hunter

A general head hunter is your catchall type of recruiter. Usually these types are head hunters may be freelance, however some agencies will also recruit within any industry for any position. Fees are typically generated when a candidate has been found, but can sometimes include reimbursed for any expenses incurred looking for the potential employee.

3) Retained Search Firms

If a company is looking for a specific employee to fill a position they may utilize the use of a retained search firm. A retained search firm is more aggressive than a recruiter, where they will actually call potential candidates who are not looking for a job and will try to recruit them. With this type of arrangement an agreement is created between the company and the search firm where a fee or retainer is paid regardless if a potential employee is found.

4) Executive Temporary Head Hunter

If a company is looking to fill an executive position temporary they will enlist the assistance of an Executive Temporary Head hunter Agency. The executive that is filling the position will actually be receiving their paychecks from the head hunter agency rather than the employer. At anytime the employer can offer the executive a full time position, however a hiring fee must first be negotiated and paid to the head hunter agency.

5) Contingency Head Hunter

The way a contingency head hunter works is the head hunter will only get paid if the hiring company decides to hire the potential employee. The head hunter will not be reimbursed for any expenses and the company does not have to guarantee that they will actually hire the employee. It's a win-win for the hiring company as they can essentially have a head hunter search for free. This type of search is more of a broad search for employees that are already looking for a job.

So no matter if you choose to work with a specialty head hunter, general head hunter, retained search firms, an executive temporary head hunter or a contingency head hunter make sure you do the right thing and choose the best type of head hunter for your company.
