Tender Documents for Kakadu Walking Opportunities

The Director of National Parks and the Kakadu Board of Management has released Tender Documents seeking to engage a consultant to develop a strategy for the assessment, classification, development, presentation, management and promotion of walking opportunities in Kakadu National Park.

Kakadu is one of very few places World Heritage listed for both its cultural and its natural values covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres of exceptional natural beauty and unique biodiversity. Kakadu National Park is managed jointly by its Aboriginal traditional owners and the Director of National Parks.

Kakadu's flora is among the richest in northern Australia-more than 2000 plant species are recorded. This richness is a result of the park's geological, landform and habitat diversity. Kakadu is also considered to be one of the most weed free national parks in the world-only 5.7 per cent of recorded species are weeds (Press et al 1995). The 1995 edition of Rare and Threatened Australian Plants (Briggs and Leigh 1995) identifies 97 rare, vulnerable or poorly known plant species that occur in Kakadu.

Bardedjilidji is the local Aboriginal word for walking track or pathway. The name also refers to the roots of waterlilies growing in freshwater swamps and billabongs. The Bardedjilidji walk provides a close up look at the habitats in the East Alligator area. This walk meanders amongst sandstone outliers, through small pockets of monsoon vine forest and paperbark woodland and past wetland areas.

The Yurmikmik Lookout Walk goes through open woodland up a stony ridge to the lookout where you can enjoy views over Jawoyn country. To the north and west are the southern ridges ofKakadu. The large sandstone hill to the northwest is Bornluk. Look along the road for the lush ribbon of vegetation growing along the South Alligator River. To the south is the high flat country of the Marrawal Plateau. Marrawal refers to the seasonally swampyuplands between the South Alligator River and the Katherine River.

The Jarangbarnmi (Koolpin Gor ge)walk follows Koolpin Creek upstream to plunge pools and waterfalls. The name Jarrangbarnmi comes from the Jawoyn words jarrang meaning flood, or big water flow, and barn meaning rift or gap.

A billabong, paperbark, swamps, fringing woodlands and sandstone plateau scrub feature along the Anbangbang, Billabong and Nawurlandja lookout walks.

The Tender Documents seeking to engage a consultant to develop a strategy for walking opportunities in Kakadu National Park call specify a closing date of 23rd February 2011.
