Rough Terrain Cranes and Their Application

Article Written By: David Von Walland

Add Your Picture There exist many types of mechanical machines for lifting, lowering and moving of heavy loads in all sorts of industrial applications. Certain common characteristics are shared among them and other differentiating features make them each suited uniquely for their specialized purposes. Rough terrain cranes are a type best suited for pick and carry, and use in rugged sites or tight quarters.

These machines all have some sort of winch which mechanically hoists the weight. Drum rotation will wind or unwind a chain or wire rope to pull heavy loads. This is either mounted on an overhead bridge or runs through a pulley on a boom, which support the weight when lifted. Horizontal movement and placement of objects is accomplished through other mechanical devices.

They have a variety of uses. Some are for loading and unloading freight at docks, rail stations, or trucking facilities. Some lift heavy parts at manufacturing plants or maintenance shops. Others are used at construction sites to lift and move materials.

Some of the machines are permanently mounted at a site and are immovable. Others are attached to a chassis and motorized so that they can move to sites where needed, or even carry loads short distances.

One type is mounted on heavy tracks and is called a crawler. It is very stable without any setup and maneuverable on rugged uneven surfaces. They are slow moving and will not reach remote sites quickly unless transported by truck. The all terrain type is also motorized and runs on rubber tires at highway speeds when transporting, but has more limited maneuverability.

Between these two varieties are rough terrain cranes. They run on four rubber tires. They are not specifically designed for travel over highways, but can quickly reach fairly remote sites.

They can maneuver over rugged ground and in tight quarters. This allows them great flexibility and enhances their productivity, since they can work without extra time for setup. Their steering can operate in two wheel, four wheel synchronized, and 4 wheel crab modes. They also have outriggers which be extended hydraulically to give added stability with heavy lifting. Other features include hydraulic raising and lowering of the boom, a telescoping boom, and 360 degree swiveling on a turret to reach in any direction.

Burly rough terrain cranes are a versatile and productive machine. They lift and carry moderately heavy loads around a rugged areas with virtually no set up time.
