Driving test: Do you have special needs to take theory test

A learner driver must obtain and clear a driving theory test before he/she books himself/herself for practical test. If some one wants licence for another vehicle, say for example, if a person has a licence for motorcycle and wants to drive car he/she has to appear and clear theory test.

On the other hand if a person wants to upgrade within a vehicle class itself the person will not usually need to take a theory test, say for example, if you have a full automatic car licence and a person wants a manual car licence then he/she will not have to take a theory test. It is your responsibility to make sure you have the correct licence for the vehicle you are driving. If you hesitant to take a theory test please contact the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) or the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

How do candidates with special requirements take the theory test? the following facilities are available for examinee with special requirements. All of the facilities require to be requested at the point of booking.

If your first verbal communication is not English, or you can't read or recognize printed English well, you can demand a voiceover in one of 21 languages. A voiceover allows you to hear the theory test instructions and questions through headphones. The questions will automatically be examined out to you; you can hear the answer options by touching the text on the screen. You can hear the questions as many times as you like, you simply need to touch the text of the question onscreen again.

If there is no voiceover provided in the language you require, you can request to have a translator assisted theory test. The call centre agent should be able to tell you the names and contact details of the relevant DVLA approved translators. It is your responsibility to arrange a test date with the translator and to pay any fees involved.

If a person has dyslexia or other reading difficulties you can ask for an English voiceover. You can also ask to have up to double time for the multiple choice part of the theory test. If you involve more than the standard time of 40 minutes for the multiple choice part you will require sending confirmation of your reading complexity to the theory test booking services.

If a person is deaf or have hearing difficulties you can ask to take the theory test in British sign language (BSL). The BSL interpretation will run alongside the standard test questions and answers. If you do not use BSL, an analyst can be taken into the test centre; this ability needs to be approved all the way through the theory test customer services section. There is no extra fee for either facility.

If you have a special need that is not met by the amenities on top of, you can get in touch with the theory test customer services section that is able to talk about your necessities and the amenities accessible. All of the accommodations above need to be requested at the time of booking.
