-- The professionals in international drivers licence conversions

Generally, you are able to drive in Queensland using your current international drivers licence. If you hold a current visa (for example a 457 “work permit” visa or a student visa) and a current drivers licence from your home country, you are entitled to drive in Queensland for the duration of your visa. However, if you have applied for and been granted permanent residency, you only have three (3) months to obtain your Queensland drivers licence. If your permanent residency was granted before you left your home country, then the three month period applies from the day your plane lands in Australia. Your permission to drive is withdrawn if you don’t obtain a Queensland drivers licence within this time period. For some, this will involve undertaking a practical driving test. For others, who are on the prescribed list of countries, there is no test involved.

Sound confusing? That’s because it is!

myWheels Driving School Brisbane is a specialist in deciphering the many intricacies involved in international licence conversions. Every case is individual and different. myWheels Driving School provides the extra service needed to ensure your licensing requirements are met. This includes anything from advice on accredited translation services, to liaising with Queensland Transport, to providing driving lessons to familiarise you with the local road rules and traffic, to coaching you in the skills necessary to pass your practical driving test.

Once you arrive in Queensland, you may notice that things are a little different to home – roundabouts, school zones and the small matter of driving on the left hand side of the road, to name but a few!

Most crashes involving international drivers are not a result of speeding or alcohol, but appear to be the product of unfamiliarity with Australian driving conditions. More particularly, there are a high proportion of crashes recorded where disorientation may have been a factor, including the failure to keep left. This is most relevant among drivers from countries where they drive on the right hand side of the road. myWheels Driving School is committed to your safety and the safety of all road users and pedestrians. We offer a complete safety awareness service for all newly arrived drivers.
