The Chrysler Crossfire is a shocking looking auto. Sitting on fat 18in amalgamate rims at the front and 19in edges at the rear, it's beautiful from any angle and in any color.

The Crossfire appeared an alluring package at its launch in 2003 : certainly it might guarantee Chrysler a foothold in the moneymaking EU coup market? Unfortunately for the Yank company the answer was no. The reason was that the Crossfire was a car that ended up delivering less than the total of its parts much to the dissatisfaction of buyers who paid over the list price for some of the 1st autos delivered to Britain.

The Crossfire's interior styling should work best : the dashboard detailing is fine and the fitment of leather as standard gives a top of the range appearance. But the effect is ruined by the application of cheap-looking silver plastics.

Under the skin the Crossfire shared a platform with the outgoing Mercedes SLK, which itself borrowed its frame from the prior generation Mercedes C-class. So even though it looked new, under the metal the Crossfire was nearly 10 years old. To compensate, the car was given additional reinforcing that made it stiff and uncomfortable. Each rumble strip and pothole is felt in the cabin and is fired by the flat, unsupportive seats.

Pricing has been the Crossfire's undoing. Today with thirty thousand miles on the clock you would be fortunate if a Chrysler dealer offered you more than andpound;11,000 in part exchange for a 2003 Crossfire coup. I think the Crossfire is a cracking looking auto with a decent engine. The cabin could be cramped and some of the trim a bit tacky and if I wished to drive quickly I'd rather be behind the wheel of a Porsche Boxster or Nissan 350Z. But the truth is that I could drive neither for a similar cash as a second-hand Crossfire.

The Crossfire could have been overpriced when it was new, but used it's beginning to seem like an enticing offer. If you would like one of the best-looking coups on the road, without the price ticket, then visit your Chrysler dealer.
