A brief history of the BMW brand and a couple of their best-selling models

Before 1918 BMW only manufactured airplane engines, however after World War I they decided to turn their attentions to manufacturing motorcycles.

From 1928-1929 the brand decided to establish itself within the car industry, one of their earliest production cars being the famous Dixi 3-15 DA.

Even though the Great Depression had taken hold, the Dixi 3-1 DA helped to carry BMW through an economic crisis that saw the end of many businesses at that time.

Just a couple of years after this in 1936, the brand was back again with a BMW type roadster, which was a resounding success and easily one of the most popular sports vehicles of the era.

Following 1949, the BMW teams continued to create new vehicles, making the six cylinder 501, the 502 with a V8 engine, the BMW 507, the four cylinder BMW 1500, the 1600, 1800 and the very popular BMW 2002.

These models helped to establish BMW as a clear leader in the field of sports car production and following 1970 the car maker became the renowned and innovative company that they still are today.

In their early years, the BMW's New Class, a series of sedans and sporting coupes, were developed and continued to be developed until 2002.

It was the success of the New Class cars that really set BMW in good stead to become an established global car maker.

All of the cars in the New Class collection were fitted with the M10 four-cylinder engine; they also boasted an independent suspension system and front disc braking system for fast and effective stopping.

More recently, BMW have released the 3 Series, the 7 Series and the M3 Coupe.

Now in its fifth generation, the mid-sized executive BMW 3 Series is currently in its fifth generation of production. After impressing many consumers over the years, the 3 Series has also been developed as the E90 and E92 and the station wagon E91 and convertible E93 models. Combining the functionalities of a crossover SUV with a station wagon, the Gran Turismo 5 Series is a further development on the range.

The leading seller in the executive car ranges from BMW is the 7 Series and it has even inspired a couple of other models. This can attribute much of its success to the iDrive technology as it was the first BMW model to be mad with a hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engine, which releases only clean water as vapour.

The X3 SUV model is first crossover model to be manufactured by BMW and is an off-roader similar to those made by Land Rover. These "Sports Activity Vehicles" or "Sports Activity Coupe" have been continually improved with a range of new models being introduced letting BMW take the reins as an all-round car maker and widening its expertise beyond sport coupes. This model has also generated a considerable amount of interest with outstanding performance and a number of cutting-edge design features.

Efficiency is something that BMW has actively developed and promoted within the industry. The car company is part of the EPA, also known as the Environmental Protection Agency, and it is also part of the South Carolina Environmental Excellence Program.

BMW strives hard to drive down the CO2 emissions of their vehicles by making a couple of alternative fuels and engines with increased efficiency. These have been installed in the newer models, which are currently available to buy or you may prefer leasing a BMW instead.
