It is no secret that less an less people are traveling this year due to the financial troubles that have hit everyone. In order to entice people to travel many airlines and hotels are offering discounts, with the thought being is better to have customers paying a reduced rate then having no customers at all. Unfortunately this is not aa policy that most major car rental companies have adopted. It is possible to save money when renting a car, your just need to know how.

1. SHOP AROUND - Take the time to shop around for the deals. Don't just limit yourself to looking online, but also call around to different rental agencies to see what type of specials they have and what the lowest rates are you can find. Don't give up it is worth the effort for the savings you will find.

2. LOOK FOR DISCOUNTS - It is possible to find coupons or discount codes online when you are booking a rental reservation on the internet. Coupons and discounts codes are simple enough to search for using your web browser, you just have to take a few minutes to look.

3. BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR VEHICLE SELECTION - Although you may be tempted to pick up a larger vehicle than you need, try to be realistic. You can save a lot of money not only on rental fees but also on gas if you pick a smaller vehicle.

4. RENTING AT THE AIRPORT WILL COST YOU - The majoirty of car rental companies charge you more money if you are renting a car at the airport. They assume that you will just pay the increased rate, and other fees they will add to the bill, because you want the convience of picking up your car when you land, and dropping it off when you are leaving again. This is great for rental companies, but not for you. You may not need the car for your whole trip, and you will end up paying more money then you need to. If you can get to a car rental location that is not near the airport you will save considerable on your rental. Renting at the airport may be more convienent, but it will cost you.

5. UNLIMITED MILEAGE - If you are going to be doing a lot of local traveling with your rental car when you reach your destination then it makes sense to choose a rental plan that offers unlimited mileage. While this option may increase your rental rate it will still save you money in the long run if you put a lot of miles on the rental car. It is cheaper to pay for unlimited mileage up front then to pay for every mile you go over the limit when you are returning the car.
