How to check the Car Water Pump

Water pump helps to maintain the temperature of the engine to avoid overheating. It is a belt driven mechanical device which circulates the mixture antifreeze element and water through the engine. The external design of the water pump varies from vehicle to vehicle but key function of all is the same. It can be found near the car's front or side, behind the fan belt.

The distinguished hollow disc shape in the center and several arms scattering outward will make it look like an octopus. It is attached to the radiator and engine on both the sides with arms. The rest of the arms keep water pump body intact. Fan belt or a secondary adjacent belt is located over the top of the axle, which is ascending from the disc.

All the water pumps work solely on centrifugal force. As soon as the engine turns on, the fan belt moves and rotating the axle at the center of the pump.

Inside, the axle is connected with chain or series of propeller blades also known as vanes. These vanes turn along with the axle. The rotation results in the suction of water from the radiator. Once the water reaches the pump, the centrifugal force generated by the vanes throw it against the outer walls. Finally, the water is force downward in a channel and eventually it enters the engine. From engine the water flows out to cylinder heads and back to the radiator and the process reiterate.

If you find any signs of liquid or oil spots on the floor under the water pump area, you must have a leakage in pump. The green color of the fluid on floor shows that your car is leaking antifreeze agent or coolant. It has been noticed that in so many cases that coolant leakage is mostly from water pump.

Open the front hood and examine visually the water pump for possible leak. If you examine closely you will find a hole at the side or bottom of the pump, called weep hole or drainage hole. These holes are normally sealed with gasket. Once the water pump begins to rip, gaskets will be corroded. In this case, the coolant begins to leak from the weep hole.

This is very severe and suggestive indication that the water pump is no longer able to do it job. If you find coolant leak from the pump when your system is stall, your foremost concern is to contact the mechanic. or else you risk your vehicle to severe and irremediable damage.
