For many people, learning to fly in Miami flight schools is simply about getting up into the big blue yonder. If that is the case, recreational flying may be as far as you ll want to go with your training, but for some, the itch to fly becomes a desire to do so as often as possible, and if that is the case, it may be that flying is a viable career goal. Before you can fly the skies with passengers, and get paid for it, you will need to get your Commercial Pilot Certificate.

Commercial Pilot Certificate

To be eligible for the training at a Miami flight school, candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age, be able to fluently read, write, and speak the English language, pass a Class 2 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) medical exam, and hold a Private Pilot Certificate. Students must also accumulate a total of 190 to 250 hours of flight time, including at least 50 hours of cross-country flight as pilot in command. Some of the required hours can be transferred over from previous flight experience and from the hour completion requirements achieved during their Certification.

Although it is not a necessary requirement, many South Florida flight schools also recommend that graduates also undergo training to get their Instrument Rating before attempting the Commercial Pilot Certification, since instrument rated pilots will more easily navigate Commercial pilot check-ride flights, be able to fly safely in a variety of weather conditions, and be more familiar with the Air Traffic Control System.

Pre-Requisite Training

It has a minimum age requirement of 17 years, and candidates must undergo a basic FAA medical exam. While the exam looks only for major physical problems, such as high blood-pressure, diabetes, heart conditions, or uncorrectable vision problems, it won t suffice for the more intense examination required for the Commercial Pilot Certificate, so candidates should make it a priority to undergo the Class 2 FAA medical exam before undertaking training for their Commercial Pilot Certificate.

The minimum required flight time is 40 hours, however, the average flight time completed by students who obtain the license at Miami flight schools is between 55 and 66 hours, and many instructors are slightly uncomfortable with students who only complete the bare minimum.

Cost

Although training cost inevitably vary slightly from school to school, and may depend largely on a candidate s study habits, individual skill aptitude, frequency of attendance, and type of training aircraft, in general most students can expect to pay between $6,000 and $10,000 for their Private Pilot License, and between $15,000 and $17,000.

Being a commercial airline pilot is not all fun and games. Unlike recreational flights, you won t be on your own schedule, and the hours are often long and hard. But for people who love to fly, a career as a commercial pilot can literally be a dream come true.
