4 Things You Should Be Keen About In Poetry Contests

Article Written By: Janet Kirk

Add Your Picture There are so many avenues that can help you grow as a poet, and poetry contests should be on this list. They present an opportunity to turn your well thought ideas into poems and possibly win a prize if it is available. Since most of the poets are turning to online sites for a chance of publishing their work or showcasing it through blog posts, the number of poetry contests has gone up. Some of the contests have a target group such as permitting only unpublished poets to enter or from a specific geographical region, but it is wise to search for as many as you can.

For instance, there are online writing communities where you can find poetry contests and writing competitions. As long as you have an account with the sites, as a writer, you can participate in any of the competitions. Every month, you can get at least 50 contests that you can enter for no charge.

However, before signing up for poetry contests, you need to consider some elements. For instance, think about the challenge. Be sure to read the announcement and understand what the challenge is. If the challenge is to write about a specific topic be sure you do so. Or if the contest challenge is to write a specific type of poem - understand how to write that poem. If any of the poetry types sounds foreign to you, there are resource centers online that will break it down for you before you sign up for the poetry contests.

So what type of poem do they want? Is it a quatrain, Haiku or tanka? Do you know how to write for different genres? How many words? Knowing all this information before you start writing will help you get the best chance at winning the poetry contest.

You may also find a contest that requires you to write for a topic provided. In that case, it calls for an imaginative mind to make sure that you stick to the theme and avoid writing out of context.

Entering a poetry contests, even if you don't win, it is better than storing your pieces in a diary waiting for a chance to have them published in mainstream media.

In addition, find out whether there are registration fees. The aim of registration fees is to ensure the commitment of writers and to attract only the serious writers. But this can be misleading since it is not always clear how much is collected and how much goes to the winner.

It is important to consider the deadline. This is the cut off point where the poetry contests submissions are no longer accepted. You should ensure that you have enough time to beat the deadline or else, choose another competition.

Good writers know how to keep time. But if you do not make it before the deadline in the first few poetry contests, do not worry because there is a good chance that you will be able enter the poem you wrote in another competition. It is better to submit a poem that you are comfortable with in a contest rather then an incomplete work.
