Enhancing Sound the Digital Audio Mastering Way
The quality of sound you get from your compact disc is a result, in part, of the CD mastering process. But, what is CD mastering? You may wonder what this process is and how it is done. Unknown to many people, this critical procedure is responsible for the CD's output quality. Before the CD hits record stores, it has to pass this process. Every CD has to undergo the process of CD mastering before it goes out to the market. It is the final process in the recording studios. After the artists have recorded their songs, they cannot just put this into CDs and sell in the market. A great deal of work still needs to be done. This is where mastering takes place. Even if the singer performed well during the recording, everything cannot be said to be perfect yet. The recorded songs will be andldquo;fine-tuned,andrdquo; so to speak, in a basic three step-process of CD mastering. The first step involves arranging of the recorded songs into a sequence, taking into consideration the spaces between each song. This step is critical to avoid the songs from overlapping. After the songs are arranged into order, the next step is the most tedious of all. In this stage, editing of the songs takes place. The recorded material will be refined. Enhancements will be done such as noise reduction, the fading in and out of each song, the balancing of the tones and volume, and many other actions. This is where the sound quality is taken care off in the entire CD mastering process. The last step in CD mastering will be transferring the songs to its final medium. When the audio has been processed, i.e. its sound quality has been andldquo;sweetenedandrdquo; in the previous step, it will now be moved into its final master format. This is where the songs or audio are put into CDs, DVDs or other media.
The entire process, however, is done by an expert called mastering engineer. A mastering engineer is someone who possesses the necessary skills in CD mastering. The mastering engineer is a professional who knows a great deal in audio engineering. To be a mastering engineer, one must be credited with an audio engineering degree. Some say 10 years of experience in mastering records will qualify one to be a professional mastering engineer. CD mastering is done at mastering studios where the mastering engineers use special equipment. These studios are as important as the engineers themselves. Besides the expertise and professional experience of the engineers, the equipment help them perform their job well.
More benefit can be received from CD mastering. First, the sound quality of the CD can be optimized. All the unnecessary sounds will be taken off and mixing of the audio will be perfectly done. Besides, the expertise of a mastering engineer will play a vital role. Every detail of the material will be taken cared of by a professional ear.
