The acoustic guitar is a popular stringed instrument originated in Spain. It has a flat, waisted body, a round sound hole, and a fretted fingerboard, or "neck," along that run six strings. The strings are fastened to tuning screws at the top of the fingerboard, and to a bridge, which is glued to the instrument's sound board or "belly" at the other end.

The strings on acoustic guitars are usually made of steel whereas on classical guitars, the top three strings are usually made of nylon or natural gut, while the lower three strings are made up of metal. The strings are tuned to E, A, D, G, B, and E that is starting with the second E below middle C and ending with the E above middle C.

The inside of both the soundboard and the back of the guitar will have something called "bracing." or strutting”. Basically, these are strips of wood that are laid across the surface in a pattern the struts serve to strengthen the wood and prevent it from warping, but they also allow the sound box to produce and vibrate the best possible tone.

Acoustic guitars are built in a variety of styles, sizes, shapes and designs and the quality of construction can vary a great deal, ranging from luthier-crafted custom models to those produced on an assembly line. Acoustic guitars are the most popular choice for many folk music and country guitarists. High quality acoustic guitars generally feature solid wood construction, with cedar tops or spruce and rosewood or mahogany sides and backs.

Whereas medium quality guitars may combine solid wood tops with laminated sides and backs, on the other hand entry level instruments are made from laminated woods. Guitar necks and fingerboards are typically constructed from stiff woods such as mahogany, rosewood and ebony.

Choosing the best combination of wood types for the top, sides, back and fretboard is also one of the important things. Obtaining the best sound from an acoustic guitar is a combination of equipment, talent, practice and technique.

Choosing appropriate strings is integral to overall quality and time invested is rewarded by excellence of the sound. There are fundamental factors to be taken into account when deciding upon strings for an acoustic guitar, each important in choosing the suitable string. They are price, type of string, gauge of string, tone required and the age of guitar.

Intonation is one of the most common factors used to establish the quality of an acoustic guitar that determines the ability of the guitar to play in tune as notes are fingered up the guitar neck. Installing frets into the neck correctly can be a costly and complicated process, and is often the first item compromised when cost is an issue. No matter the quality of construction or materials used, poor intonation reflects the lower quality of the acoustic guitar.
