There are many historical monuments located in Brisbane. ANZAC square, which is located in the city centre is a peaceful place to enjoy a quite lunch or show your respect for falling war heroes. The Shrine of Remembrance was built in 1930. This shrine has an eternal flame in honour of the soldiers who died during World War I. There is also the Shrine of Memories, which is located in the pedestrian tunnel. Here you will find a dedication to the soldiers of World War II. Sites that you will enjoy are plaques, honour rolls and homemade mosaics for original World War II cemeteries.
In regal King George Square, home of the city's enormous Christmas tree in December, is the historic Brisbane City Hall. Opened in 1930, this impressive sandstone building is topped by a soaring 92 metre clock tower. Tours are available and include a trip up this tower which offers one of the best views across the city.
City Hall is also the home for Brisbane's latest addition, the Museum of Brisbane (MoB). There are five exhibits to the MoB which focus around the history and culture of the people. Each display includes history, design, craft and visual arts. The MoB also offers resources, both text based and online in its Discovery Room. You can also stop into the store and find something created by the people of Brisbane.
St Johns Cathedral is a striking example of Gothic-Revival architecture was built in three stages, the first beginning in 1906. It has the only fully stone-vaulted ceiling in Australia as well as extensive woodcarvings by Queensland artists, fossiliferous marble 350 million years old and beautiful stained glass windows. Next to the cathedral is the Deanery, built in 1850 and formerly the residence of Queenslands first governor. Sir George Bowen. Tours are conducted daily.
Custom House, which sits on the edge of the Brisbane River, was built in 1889. It has been beautifully restored and become part of the University of Queensland where you will now find an Art gallery and brasserie with waterfront tables. This building used to be used as the city's Custom House until the port activities moved closed to the river mouth. The city is very river focused with the spectacular Southbank development being the home of the Queensland Museum and the Performing Arts Complex (QPAC). Just metres away, you will find yourself in the midst of eclectic markets, positioned alongside the pristine sands of a saltwater lagoon.
Sip a lazy coffee at a caf?n the gardens or challenge yourself to scale the Story Bridge. Shop in the edgiest designer boutiques or cruise the glistening waterways aboard the City Cat. Roll the dice with lady luck in the casino or dance the night away in a hip Valley nightclub. Enjoy cosmopolitan dining and five star luxury, or trade the high life for the peace of the bush or the waters of the bay, in just minutes.
